How BIM was implemented on the Istanbul Grand Airpor (IGA) Project
Istanbul Grand Airpor (IGA) project is the world’s biggest airport project. BIM plays a crucial role to expedite the development process.
BIM was employed at all phases commencing from design, and progressing with construction and operation whereas controlling the deployment of the proper technological processes and people transformation. BIM helps in the coordination and engineering of all the disciplines ranging from structure, architecture, MEP, baggage handling systems etc of the airport inside the virtual platform. BIM offers a strategic role in accomplishing engineering and design to speed up and enhance the design and construction which become a key factor to complete the project on time and before dead line.
Besides, BIM manages the subcontractors efficiently and reduces any unpredicted cost overruns whereas minimizes waste on site. With BIM, it becomes easier to get people organized inside a virtual collaborative environment.
BIM helps in improving the coordination amount the project individuals which comprise of the designers and subcontractors. Another crucial benefit is assigning integrated project delivery in a virtual room, also known as BIM Room, for improved coordination, collaborative work as well as taking decisions with the subcontractors and designers.
150 iPads are used to bring all these benefits along with all coordinated BIM models which are applied by the site engineers. Besides, providing 3D Models, through cloud system validated 2D shop drawings are also arranged for the field. Together with the production on site, QA/QC is also incorporated into a cloud system so that the engineers of both superstructure and infrastructure can attain with their iPads. All of these applications occur on the Autodesk 360 Field platform. Besides, BIM makes it possible to generate the biggest 4D model in the world as well as integrate over 30,000 activities into the model to get the idea on the advancement of the project in each day and month to efficiently control over the advancement of the project.
After finishing of the project, the airport will be operated for 25 years through the design and construction phases as well as the operation stage. The role of BIM is also very crucial for maintenance of the asset. BIM also facilitates to obtain all the required information efficiently and settle future operational issues associated with airport systems throughout pre-commissioning, commissioning and maintenance phases. Besides, BIM is implemented at all dimensions to facilitate 6D of BIM which comprises of facility management/lifecycle management stage to be taking place as soon as the first stage is finished causing in the provision of sustainability.
