Barnhart Balfour Beatty Completes Renovation of Three Elementary Schools in Redondo Beach
19th March 2010
Redondo Beach, California - The Redondo Beach Unified School District and construction manager Barnhart Balfour Beatty have announced the completion of a $4.8-million renovation of the District’s Madison, Birney and Beryl Elementary Schools.
The Madison modernization included a new computer lab building, renovation of the school library, main office, conference room, health office, cafeteria and teachers’ workroom, upgraded fencing around the Kindergarten playground, and a resurfaced main playground.
Renovations were made to classrooms; the staff lounge and the teachers’ workroom at Beryl Elementary, and two new buildings were added to the campus to house an expanded computer lab and a new resource/learning center.
At Birney Elementary, two new buildings were added for Kindergarten classrooms and a computer lab, and upgrades were made to the existing classrooms, library, learning center, administration building, staff lounge, teacher workrooms and multi-purpose room. A spacious new garden area, new handball walls and upgrades to existing playing fields were installed on the school grounds.
Funding for the work was provided by Bond Measure C, a $145-million general obligation bond measure that was passed in February 2008 to improve facilities at district schools. The architecture firm of Westbury & White of Tustin, Calif., designed the projects.
Members of the Barnhart team included Gil Fullen, area vice president; senior project manager Steve Nelson; project manager Chase Lowary; and superintendents Sergio Martinez and Brian Williamson.
Barnhart Balfour Beatty is a general building, engineering and construction management firm. The company is leading the way in Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology with a four-person in-house BIM department, and it maintains an active design-build division, which fosters an environment of collaboration between architects, engineers, builders and owners. Active in construction management and program management services, Barnhart Balfour Beatty works with education clients throughout the state of California. The company also has a 27-year history of working with the military constructing a variety of structures including weapons and armament, barrack, hanger and aquatic facilities.
