An Overview - Autodesk Navisworks 2014 and Its Enhancements

Autodesk Navisworks 2014 has two parts, Autodesk Navisworks Manage 2014 and Autodesk Navisworks Simulate 2014. Autodesk presented Navisworks with new features in 2014 which include Quantification, Autodesk rendering, Measurement tools, Point cloud enhancements, Clash detective, Navisworks/Autodesk® BIM 360TM Glue integration and Mobile model viewing. Some of the various useful features in Navisworks 2014 are listed below:

Quantification: This tool helps adding powerful quantification to the coordination model and change analysis. Some of its special features are:

Model takeoff

  • Automated takeoff from object parameters.
  • Manual takeoff for modelled objects.
  • Virtual takeoff for unmodelled objects.

Item & resource catalogs

  • Import or create item and resource catalogs.
  • Associate items with resources.
  • Use formulas in catalogs.
  • Export catalog.

Workbook

  • Quantification reporting.
  • Export to Microsoft® Excel®.

Timeliner Selection Set Export: User can export their Task List to create a folder of Selection Sets that matches the name of the Tasks. These Sets automatically attached to the Tasks. The users require adding items to each Selection Set. This feature makes attaching or mapping objects to tasks very easy.

Timeliner Format Update: User can now utilize Primavera P6 v8.2.

Preserve Clash Highlighting in Viewpoints reporting: A feature that was available in 2013 via SP2 was the ability to save the Clash Report to Viewpoints and keep the visual fidelity of the Clash View. Now user can even have the ability to choose if you want that functionality via a checkbox. Besides it even keeps the Redlines.

Clash Elements Different Colors: Users can set Item 1 and Item 2 to be different colors rather than both of them using the Clash Status color.

Clash Comments: The Clash Results now include a column that shows if a Clash has a Comment and how many.

Clash Filters: Users can filter the Clashes to only show what they have currently selected. The new Clash Filters for 2014 are exclusive because if the users have the 2 clashing elements selected, this will show clash results where both of the clashing items are included in their current item selection. This filter will show clash results where one or both or the clashing items are included in the users current item selection, if they have 1 or 2 clashing elements selected.

Clash Report Filter: If the user has a Filter applied to his Clash Results, he can export a Report of just the Filtered Clashes.

Clash Isolation Settings: The Dim Other and Hide Other are no longer part of a drop-down menu, they are buttons next to each other.

Measurement Tools: Users can now do measurements where they can lock the X, Y or Z axis from the first point selected. They can now measure in a Perpendicular or Parallel alignment to the surface of an object. They can also get some new visual cues when selecting a Face (small rectangle behind the cursor), Edge (small line behind the cursor) or Point (an "X" behind the cursor). The visual cues replace the cursor changing, the cursor now keep a "+" as it's graphic. Some of the specialty of this tool are:

Improved snapping

  • Intuitive display of vertex, edge, face snapping

Measurement locking

  • Lock measurement to XYZ axis
  • Lock measurement parallel or perpendicular to surface

QuickZoom

  • Zoom to enable more accurate selection of vertex, edge, or face
  • Achieve greater control with better measuring tools

Rendering: Rendering helps in attaining more photorealistic results for stronger visualization. Same Materials as the other Autodesk software and the same rendering engine can be used. User can also get the Ray Trace tool that was introduced in Revit 2013. Autodesk Rendering includes:

Materials

  • Autodesk® Consistent Materials library
  • Material editor
  • Texture space editor

Lighting

  • Direct manipulation
  • Point, spot, distant, web

Environment

  • Immediate visual feedback
  • Sun, sky, exposure

Real-time raytracing

  • Interactive near-photorealistic visualization

Sectioning: User can now "limit" their sectioning planes/box to elements they have selected. Besides, they can also show a section cut and the limit to be 1st Floor to 2nd Floor.

It is important to note that the Clash items are only available in Navisworks Manage, all the other features are available in Navisworks Simulate as well.

Enhanced Point Cloud Engine and File Support:Import and visualize massive point cloud datasets-

  • Open *.rcs /*.rcp format
  • Support measure, snap, clash
  • Reality capture workflows with Autodesk® AutoCAD®, Autodesk® Revit®, and Autodesk Inventor® software
  • Support more formats for greater accessibility

Publish Navisworks models to support coordination:"Glue It" from Navisworks Manage & Simulate

  • Publish Navisworks models for coordination
  • Publish to BIM 360 Glue for online and offline mobile access

"Open from Glue" in Navisworks Manage & Simulate - Bring Glue models into Navisworks for advanced workflows:

  • Quantification
  • Timeliner
  • Rendering
  • Simulation/animation
  • Integrate your desktop and cloud-based BIM workflow.

Autodesk BIM 360 Glue Mobile Access includes various features such as:

  • Freely available mobile viewing of Navisworks models
  • Walk-through navigation and immersive look-around capabilities
  • Online or offline access to models and associated object properties
  • Extend the power of the Navisworks model outside the office.
